-"Sam...was
a primitive version of the basic kind of hand and rod puppet that
Jim
Henson devised in the mid-fifties. He had the face of a prizefighter,
with
protruding Clark Gable ears, a W.C. Fields nose, and permanently
astonished
eyes. Like a well designed cartoon character, he derived some of his
personality
from his features. But Jim's manipulation of Sam - a tilt of the
head
to find an appropriate eye focus, a bounce to a song - completed the
picture."

Host:
"Sam"
with other lifelike puppets created/operated by Jim Henson and
Jane
Anne Nebel. In 1958, friend Bob Payne took Jim Henson's place
on the
show for a period of time while Jim visited Europe. Jerry Juhl
joined
the Hensons in 1961 initially to replace Jane as puppeteer.
