According
to Karen Falk, Archivist for The Jim Henson Company, "Jim
Henson
made
his first puppets in the spring of 1954, his senior year at
(Hyattsville's
Northwestern)
High School as part of a school puppet club. He performed
them
briefly on WTOP-TV 9 for
'The
Junior Morning Show' that summer.
Among
those puppets were 'Pierre', a Frenchman based on a cartoon
character that
Jim created for a high school publication...
... (T)he group who appeared on 'Sam and Friends' (were):
Kermit,
Sam, Harry the Hipster, Yorick, Mushmelon, Icky Gunk,
Moldy
Hay, Chicken Liver, Hank and Frank, the Professor, and Pierre."

-Bernie
Harrison's "On The Air" column (Sunday Star TV Magazine, 2/23/69),
stated
that Jim Henson's first TV job was on Roy Meachum's WTOP-TV
Saturday
show
in 1954. "The Junior Morning Show", a spin-off of Meachum's weekday
"The
Morning Show", lasted only three weeks. But when that show was dropped,
Meachum reportedly telephoned WRC-TV Program
Director Jim Kovacs to suggest that he find a place for the talented
lad
at that station. Kovacs complied.
